Revitalising a commercial coastal landmark

The Western Approach Trading Centre, a prominent commercial hub in South Shields, had long served the local community. However, its ageing exterior presented a challenge to attracting new tenants and maintaining its appeal. Property management firm JLL recognised the need for an extensive refurbishment to revitalise the building’s façade and contacted Shields Coatings to resolve these issues.

Decades of exposure to the harsh coastal environment had taken their toll on the Western Approach Trading Centre. The building’s cladding exhibited signs of significant wear and tear, with a faded and tired appearance. Critically, the original protective coating had deteriorated, leaving the roof vulnerable to corrosion and water ingress. This not only detracted from the building’s visual appeal but also posed a risk to its structural integrity. Thus, a robust, long-lasting solution was required to safeguard the property’s future.

We approached the project with a focus on both aesthetics and durability. Following a thorough site assessment, we implemented a specialised cladding coating and commercial painting system. This advanced system provided excellent corrosion protection and waterproofing, perfectly suited for the challenging coastal conditions.
